Trial for Osama bin Laden's son-in-law may be delayed by sequester furloughs

Suleiman Abu Ghaith lawyers want trial moved to Manhattan, demanding a jury in New York that it would suffer prejudice

a step son-in-law of Osama bin Laden civil trial may be delayed until next year because of budget cuts resulting from capture, a U.S. court heard Monday.

lawyers suspected al-Qaeda spokesman Abu Ghaith Suleiman, said that because of the compulsory leave of five weeks of all lawyers in the federal defense in New York, the proceedings may be postponed from September to January 2013.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan said he was "very worrying" that so important a judgment could be affected by the government cuts.

In another development, defense lawyers suggested that they intend to request hearings to be away from the federal court in Manhattan - just a few blocks from the site September 11 - because of the possibility that a jury be compromised.

Abu Ghaith face an indictment that includes charges of conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens. The 47-year-old Kuwaiti's spokesman alleged Al-Qaeda and the son-in-law of former chief Osama bin Laden's terrorist network.

prosecutors say it was called in the night of September 11 attacks, Osama bin Laden and asked for help Al Qaeda campaign against the West.

The next morning, Abu Ghaith - with bin Laden and al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, released a video in which he warned the United States that "a large army gathers against you "and calling it" Nation of Islam "to fight against" Jews, Christians and Americans. "

later delivered a speech in which he warned Muslims not to "get on a plane and do not live in large buildings."

In Monday's hearing, lawyers for the suspects told the court they were considering the possibility of filing a motion for change of venue.

outside the court, defense attorney Martin Cohen asked if he thought it possible to find an impartial jury, given the proximity of the courtroom where nearly 3,000 people died September 11, 2001.

"This is a question we are mulling over," said Cohen. She gave the same answer when asked who thought that an impartial jury could not be found.

Abu Ghaith was arrested on February 28 and was transferred to U.S. soil tomorrow. According to reports, was arrested in Turkey after entering the country from Iran. Local authorities provided information to the U.S. authorities and the transfer of Abu Ghaith allegedly took place in Jordan.
